Issue No 9, 18th July 2010

This issue….

On average August has less rainfall than June and July and is not a bad time to visit Phuket.

We are excitedly busy, organising and deciding what to pack to go on vacation to Phuket in late July ourselves.

We decided to make the most of the cheap vacation packages on offer and the lower tourist numbers to catch up with some wonderful people that we have met over the last 12 months writing our website.

The average temperature in Phuket during August is approximately 22 – 30 degrees. We may get some brief downpours but with lots of sun in between to get out and enjoy all of Phuket’s wonderful attractions and things to do.

What’s On in Phuket in August 2010

From the 6th to the 12th August car enthusiasts can enjoy The Andaman Motor Expo at Central Festival. The exhibition will include BMW, Volvo and many more makes of cars. One of the highlights of the event will include a music competition called the ‘Andaman Music Contest’. The winner of the competition will win 30,000 baht worth in prizes. In addition, BB Gun lovers could also go in the BB Gun shooting contest which offers 20,000 baht worth in prizes for the winners.

The Queen's Birthday falls on 12th August which also doubles as Mother's Day in Thailand. Visitors to Phuket will enjoy a spectacular fireworks display on the night of August 12th, as a part of the celebrations. The 40-minute show will start at 8.30pm and will take place at Laem Sapan Hin Cape.

For those on a holiday vacation in Phuket in August you really shouldn’t miss the Por Tor or Hungry Ghost Festival. The festival is an ancient religious ceremony originating from a Chinese tradition. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar, it is believed that the spirits of the ancestors descend to revisit their homes.

The celebrations are centred around the Por Tor Kong Shrine in Bang Neaw, located in Phuket Town. It is believed that Por Tor Kong the god of devils, who rules the underground, opens the gates of the spirit world to allow the Spirits to return to the earth during these two weeks. The Chinese communities in Phuket make food offerings to appease the hungry spirits and to pay their respects. Turtle-shaped cakes are a popular offering as turtles represent longevity. The worshippers believe that these turtle cakes will help prolong their own life.

This unique festival offers travellers an inside look at the religious and cultural history of Phuket Island. The Por Tor Festival starts from the 16th August through to the 23rd August
